South Charleston firefighters on the scene of Sunday's drowning. (Photo/WCHS-TV) SOUTH CHARLESTON, W.Va. — A man is dead after drowning in the Kanawha River. Authorities said it happened Sunday afternoon near South Charleston when a kayak flipped over. A woman who was with the victim was rescued and taken to a hospital. The DNR said it doesn’t appear the two had lifejackets. An investigation is underway.

It took about two hours to make Sunday’s rescue. (Photo/Nitro Fire Dept.) NITRO, W.Va. — A crew led by the Nitro Fire Department rescued an injured hiker Sunday afternoon. A roping system was used to rescue the hiker. (Photo/Nitro Fire Dept.)The two-hour rescue took place on one of the back trails at Ridenour Lake. The hiker had suffered a broken ankle. Fire department and Kanawha County Ambulance Authority crews used a roping system to make the rescue. The hiker was taken to the hospital.

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — It’s going to take most of Easter Sunday to restore power to thousands of residents in north central West Virginia after a heavy storm blew through the area Saturday night. Mon Power said it had more than 45,000 customers without service in West Virginia as of 5 a.m. Sunday. Most of the outages are in Monongalia County where the storm did the most damage. Mon Power said more than 25,000 of its customers in Monongalia County were without service Sunday morning.

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — A Marshall University graduate student is fighting to continue his education in the United States after being informed by the federal government his status was being revoked. The American Civil Liberties Union of West Virginia has filed the lawsuit in U.S. District Court in Huntington on behalf of the student, identified as S.V. According to the lawsuit, S.V. received an emailrecently saying his F-1 Visa was being revoked because his name was found on a criminal record.
