CHARLESTON — A pair of West Virginia federal judges signed an order Thursday that called for the Trump administration to work on returning an immigrant and Maryland resident back to the states from an El Salvador prison, the same prison that one of West Virginia’s two members of Congress took selfies in front of. The U.S. Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals issued an order Thursday denying the government’s request for an emergency stay and a writ of mandamus in the case of Abrego Garcia v. Noem.

CHARLESTON — It is official: West Virginia has a balanced general revenue budget for fiscal year 2026 beginning in July, though the budget approved by Gov. Patrick Morrisey included several vetoes of individual line items to create more of an unappropriated balance to address future issues. In a press release late Thursday night, Morrisey announced that he signed House Bill 2026, the vehicle for next fiscal year’s general revenue budget.

RIPLEY – Surrounded by fifth-graders at Ripley Elementary School Tuesday morning, West Virginia Gov. Patrick Morrisey signed a bill championed by Senate Education Committee Chairwoman Amy Grady addressing student discipline concerns. Senate Bill 199 passed the state Senate 33-0 and the House of Delegates 94-3. Morrisey said the bill creates a streamlined process for addressing student behavior, safety and intervention in classrooms.

CHARLESTON – While children hunted for Easter eggs on the lawn of the Capitol Saturday, the West Virginia Legislature worked to get its remaining bills into the basket on the final day of the 2025 regular session, though the process on the bill eliminating diversity, equity and inclusion got scrambled. The House of Delegates and Senate adjourned at midnight Saturday after first gaveling in on Feb. 12, finishing a 60-day session that saw 1,516 House bills and 944 Senate bills introduced.

CHARLESTON — A bill named for a victim of fentanyl poisoning and aimed at major drug kingpins and dealers was passed by the West Virginia House of Delegates Friday. The House passed Senate Bill 196, Lauren’s Law, in a 98-1 vote Friday morning. SB 196 proposes increasing the severity of sentences for multiple drug offenses, including distributing large quantities of heroin, cocaine, methamphetamine and fentanyl.
