BLOOMINGTON — A Bloomington firefighter was treated for heat exhaustion and two residents were displaced after a Saturday morning house fire, officials said. A press statement from the Bloomington Fire Department said crews were called at 11:32 a.m. Saturday to a fire on the outside of a home at 707 East Grove Street and smoke spread through the interior.

The naming of the first U.S. pope on Thursday prompted plenty of celebration in Central Illinois, heightened by the fact that the Catholic Church's new leader has roots just a few hours away. At Central Catholic High School in Bloomington, students gathered in the auditorium to watch on a screen as Robert Prevost — taking the name Pope Leo XIV — addressed the tens of thousands who gathered at St. Peter's Square in Vatican City.

NORMAL — Illinois State University's Horticulture Center in Normal is inviting people to get hands on with nature, agriculture and art over a May field day. The free event will take place 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, May 3, on the west side of the Horticulture Center, which is at 1001 W. Raab Road in Normal. Organizers said the event will showcase animal labor, including plowing and hauling; and presentations on pollinators and native plants.

NORMAL — The Spring River Poetry Review will host two award-winning poets for its annual Lucia Getsi Reading on April 23. The reading, which honors the longtime Illinois State University creative writing program director and editor of the Spring River Poetry Review, Lucia Getsi, will feature Ali Beheler and Victoria Chang. The reading takes place at 7 p.m. April 23 at the Normal Theater, 209 W. North St., Normal.
