Maryland teen arrested for threats to ‘shoot up’ OHS

Last Tuesday, (Aug. 29) the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office (OCSO) announced a Maryland teenager who they say was linked to threats to shoot up Oxford High School was arrested by Maryland State Police. According to a release from the OCSO, the 17-year-old male from Baltimore, Md., was arrested on Aug. 24 and charged in Maryland juvenile court with multiple crimes including threats of mass harm and improper use of a telephone.

Oxford-Lake Orion football to be aired in Washington SquareBy Don RushAre you ready for some football? One of the community’s most anticipated games of the year is this Friday. The cross-town rivalry between the Wildcats of Oxford and the Lake Orion Dragons has created many memories, with the winner each year owning the rights to the coveted Double O trophy. This year, Oxford will travel to Lake Orion High School and fight to gain back control of the trophy, having lost last year at home, 28-10.

By Don RushDuring peak boating season between Memorial and Labor Day, the 460 acre Lakeville Lake in Addison Township has about 14,000 boats access the lake via the Department of Natural Resource boat launch facility. That equals at least 14,000 chances of invasive species being introduced to those waters.

Officials of the Oxford Chamber of Commerce are inviting the community to meet area businesses at their annual Business Expo, from 3 to 6 p.m. on Sept. 14. “This is a family friendly event,” the chamber’s Sarah Umsheid said. “This is a chance to see over 40 area businesses and the first 100 people to attend will receive goodie bags, sponsored by the View Newspaper Group (which publishes the Oxford Leader).”Admission is free.

This week sure as heck feels like a “back to school” week. Which makes sense, of course, because most kids are back to school after their summer breaks. When I write “feels like” back to school time, I mean my internal clock/calendar registers in my brain, “summer is over, back to the books.”There is something in the air and maybe it’s just the actual air. It’s not as humid. The air’s a little more crisp. Just last Wednesday it was gray with a high temperature somewhere below 60 degrees.

Oxford Township announced last week that the Oxford Fire Dept. is offering the American Heart Association’s Family and Friends CPR classes to the public, free of charge, on a monthly basis for two years. According to CJ Carnacchio, the township’s Communications and Grants Manager, the CPR training equipment and instructor time are being paid for from $12,465 grant from the Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan and a $1,600 donation from the Chaldean Community Foundation.
