MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - A state lawmaker is proposing an expansion of Alabama’s capital murder law in the wake of Sunday’s fatal shooting inside the Saenger Theatre. In order to charge capital murder – which carries a potential death sentence – prosecutors in Alabama must show at least one aggravating factor, such as killing a police officer, a child younger than 14, or killing multiple victims in the same act.

MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - Pronouncing himself “heartbroken and infuriated” by Sunday’s fatal shooting at a dance recital, Mobile County District Attorney Keith Blackwood said Tuesday that he has charged the alleged shooter with capital murder. Police allege that Marcus Dangelo Sanders, 27, of Mobile, opened fire inside the Saenger Theatre on Sunday, killing one man and wounding another victim.

(WALA) - The man accused of shooting two people at a children’s dance recital was acting in self-defense and had previous run-ins with the man who died on Sunday, the defendant’s lawyer said Tuesday. Marcus Dangelo Sanders appeared in Mobile County District Court long enough Tuesday for the judge to postpone his bond hearing to give prosecutors an opportunity to seek his detention under Aniah’s Law, which gives judges greater discretion in denying bond.

MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - “Construction issues” have pushed back the projected start of the Amtrak Mardi Gras Service by a couple of weeks, the head of the Southern Rail Commission told FOX10 News on Wednesday. Chairman Knox Ross said that means the route between Mobile and New Orleans likely will not go live until the end of July or beginning of August. “We know the train’s gonna run,” he said.
