The softball program won its fifth straight title and the football program is making strides to join the best teams in Class 4A. Head coach Wade Waldrop enters his second season with the program looking to take another big step in 2024. The Makos already impressed many football fans as they bounced back from a one-win season in 2023 to a playoff contender in 2024.

MOBILE, Ala. (WKRG) — More than three decades ago Sherman Williams was one of the state’s best high school football players gearing up for his senior season. Now, Williams is leading the first high school football program of his own at Murphy. The Blount graduate and former University of Alabama star running back was hired in March and he has started laying the groundwork in spring practice. Williams was a legend as a player.

EIGHT MILE, Ala. (WKRG) — Local high school football teams are using the spring to gear up for the regular season. Blount Head coach Ramon Nelson is back for his third season with the Leopards in the very tough Class 6A Region 1. Nelson opted to hold a skill development spring practice. The AHSAA allows teams that do not hold a traditional practice session to begin fall camp a week early. Nelson believes the team is utilizing the time wisely and improving through the spring.

IRVINGTON Ala. (WKRG) — The Alma Bryant football team entered spring practice with a lot of enthusiasm. The Hurricanes are looking to build on the momentum from late last season. The team closed the year with two big wins in region play. Alma Bryant knocked off Robertsdale 40-12, then beat Foley 14-10 in the season finale. It marked their first win over the Lions in program history. Alma Bryant finished just one spot out of the Class 7A playoffs.

MOBILE, Ala. (WKRG) — Labaron Philon announced on Instagram he is withdrawing his name from the 2025 NBA Draft and will return to Tuscaloosa for another season with the Crimson Tide. His Instagram post had a graphic reading, “I’m back.”Philon will likely be a focal point for Nate Oats and the Crimson Tide as a sophomore. In the 2024-’25 season, he averaged 10.6 points on 45.2% shooting from the field and 31.5% from three-point range. He also averaged 3.8 assists, 3.3 rebounds and 1.4 steals.
