The U.S. Navy vessel known as CVN 65 has already ceased to be the USS Enterprise. On Mobile’s waterfront it will cease to be a ship, or even a hull. That’s the outlook since late Friday, when the U.S. Department of Defense posted a brief notice that a contract worth more than half a billion dollars had been awarded to NorthStar Marine Dismantlement, a company planning to break down the world’s first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier in Mobile.

Jamal Roberts won “American Idol” and promptly followed that up with a No. 1 gospel song. One of the first stages he’ll hit as “Idol” winner is an Alabama festival coming up in mid-June. Roberts, 27, a gym teacher from Meridian, Miss., won the most recent season of “Idol” on May 18, triumphing over a field that had included several contenders from Alabama.

Jonathan Young, who’s from the Gulf Shores area, competed in the 42nd season of “Survivor” in 2022. Now he’s among the cast of the show’s 50th season, which will premiere in Spring 2026.

An Alabama chef with multiple James Beard nominations has set an opening date for his newest venture in a coastal destination city. According to information released Wednesday, Chef Bill Briand and the Deep Roots Restaurant Group will open Little Bird at 404 Oak Ave. on June 4. Deep Roots operates Fairhope’s Hope Farm restaurant and event venue; Hope Farm co-founders Robert and Bentley Evans are partners in the new venture.
