Carl A. Greunke, 86, of Fremont died Saturday, July 6, 2024 at Dunklau Gardens in Fremont. Carl August Greunke was born July 19, 1937, in Jefferson City, Missouri, the oldest of four boys born to Theodore and Dorothea (Wehrend) Greunke. He was baptized July 30, 1937, at home on the family farm near Drake, Missouri. Carl and his brother Martin were raised by their uncle and aunt, Julius and Grace Greunke, after their mother’s death during a flu epidemic in January, 1944.

Fremont police arrested one man following an incident Monday morning. At about 12:44 a.m., officers responded to the area of West Sixth Street and North I Street in reference to a man waving a gun. A second caller reported that the individual had previously pulled a gun on two people at a residence in the 800 block of North Main Street. A third caller advised that the man was seen walking down the street pulling on vehicle door handles.

Weather permitting, work is scheduled to begin today (July 8) on the old U.S. Highway 30 North Bend to Fremont project, according to the Nebraska Department of Transportation. The project includes an asphalt overlay, bridge repairs, and other minor work on old U.S. 30, now known as Platte View Road. Traffic will be maintained with various lane closures and flaggers. There are detours planned for the bridge repair work. Anticipated completion is Jan. 2025.

Authorities have confirmed that the body of a missing Fremont teenager has been recovered from the Platte River. The body of Jackson Potter, 17, was recovered Thursday near Sokol Camp in Douglas County. Potter was with family and friends Sunday night at Hormel Park. His sister Addisyn was in the water when the sand shifted. She was going under and her brother jumped in to save her. She made it to safety, but he was swept away by the river. Potter was a 2024 Fremont High School graduate.

The Fremont Police Department is participating in the NDOT Highway Safety office for a speeding prevention traffic enforcement grant. The grant, scheduled for July 12-31, is specifically focused on speeding enforcement with an effort to reduce traffic crash injuries and fatalities. FPD has seven officers participating during the grant focused solely on traffic enforcement with an emphasis on speeding enforcement.

Sara Anne Person, 84, of Fremont, died Monday, July 1, 2024, in her home surrounded by loved ones. Sara was born on August 24, 1939, to Lawrence and Virginia (Howe) Henderson in San Francisco, California. The second youngest of six siblings, she grew up in Berkeley, California participating in multiple activities, including Girl Scouts, Rainbow Girls, basketball, and volleyball.

OMAHA – Steve Goeser, president and CEO of Methodist Health System, has announced the promotion of two members of the Methodist executive leadership team. Josie Abboud, president and CEO of Methodist Hospital and Methodist Women’s Hospital, has been promoted to Methodist Health System executive vice president, effective July 1. In her new capacity, Abboud will retain all of her current responsibilities and add the supervision of Methodist Health System affiliate presidents to her duties.
