High winds were expected to continue through 11 p.m. June 20 in Reno, Sparks and much of northwestern Nevada and northeastern California, the National Weather Service reported. The region remained under a wind advisory until late evening, with west winds of 25 to 35 mph and wind gusts of up to 65 mph. Expect blowing dust, which can reduce visibility, and waves of up to 4 feet on Pyramid Lake.

We asked, and readers voted: The No. 1 high school girls sports team of 2024-25 was the state champion Pyramid Lake Lakers basketball team. The Lakers won 52.4% of this week's vote among the 26 teams nominated. Pyramid Lake made it three state titles in a row this winter, defeating Eureka 50-34 in the state 1A title game on Feb. 22.

Arlan Melendez, longtime chairman of the Reno-Sparks Indian Colony, died Tuesday, the RSIC announced on Facebook. He was 78. Melendez served the RSIC for 36 years, four as tribal council member and 32 as tribal chairman before his retirement in 2023. While leading the council, Melendez focused on economic development, education and stronger definition of tribal identity, he told the RGJ in 2023.
