    Jimmy Beans Wool, the south Reno yarn retailer and knitting tourism destination, announced Wednesday that it had been acquired by Local Crafts Group, a division of private equity firm Blue Point Capital Partners. The longtime Reno company has sold knitting and crochet supplies online and in store for more than two decades. Its assets include the 20,000-square-foot headquarters on Trademark Drive and a 30,000-square-foot yarn-dyeing facility in Fort Worth, Texas.

    Add Silver Stage High School to the roster of award-winning schools for Champion Chevrolet Athlete of the Week. Landen Wolf, a pitcher for Silver Stage Nighthawks baseball, ran away with this week's award, collecting 9,337 votes, or 45.7% of the total, in the 18-way contest. Wolf struck out 16 batters and allowed three hits in 7.1 innings in a 2-1 loss to West Wendover on April 12. It was his third time striking out 16; he's averaging more than 10 per game.

    Reno High School was fifth in the nation in the Center for Civic Education's "We the People" 2025 competition. The 26-student Huskies We The People team landed in the top five among the 48 teams who traveled to Washington, D.C. for the April 9-11 competition. It's the best showing for a Nevada school since Reno High took third in 2021.

    The Lyrid meteor shower, active from April 16-26, peaks on April 21-22. Viewing conditions are favorable in Northern Nevada with dark skies and a half-moon rising after 3:30 a.m.Lyrids are known for fast meteors and occasional fireballs, with potential for up to 100 meteors per hour during peak activity. The Lyrid meteor shower, one of the oldest known meteor showers, starts April 16 and runs through April 26. The shower will peak in the late evening of April 21 through dawn on April 22.

    Nevada ranked high on the list for average federal tax refunds, according to the latest data from the IRS. Nevada refunds averaged $3,643 in 2022, the most recent year with available data, according to travel advice website Upgraded Points. That put the Silver State in fourth place behind Florida, Texas and Wyoming. The study also examined how refund amounts have changed over the past five years due to economic disruptions from the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent recovery measures.
