More than a few people probably wish they had $1.375 million to buy the historic Levy Mansion in downtown Reno to fill it with books. The home of the former, beloved Sundance Books and Music at 121 California Ave. is for sale. The 4,700-square-foot, three-story mansion that's on the National Register of Historic Places has been empty since Sundance closed on May 31, 2024.

Reno High School students involved in the vandalism act on May 22 are no longer allowed to participate in their graduation ceremony, and will be suspended from classes for the rest of the year, according to the Washoe County School District. Videos posted to social media show young people, many masked, spray-painting the walls with obscenities and smashing windows, TVs and trophy cases. At least one swastika and racial slur were painted on the walls and floor.

The Washoe County School District is facing a budget shortfall of millions over the next two school years. But it will wait and hope for more money from lawmakers with just days left in the 2025 legislative session. “It hit us like a 2-by-4 right between the eyes,” Mark Mathers, the school district's chief financial officer, told the school board this week, referring to the state's economic outlook going into the next two school years.

At the first Washoe County School Board meeting since Reno High was vandalized, Superintendent Joe Ernst vowed the investigation would be “thorough and just.”On May 27, he said the investigation is ongoing and will take time. On May 22, after seniors had gathered for a sunset party, the school was broken into sometime after 10 p.m.Videos taken during the incident and posted to social media show what appears to be students, many wearing masks, spray-painting the walls with obscenities.
