A bill to approve making lacrossse an official NIAA sport is on Nevada Gov. Joe Lombardo's desk, awaiting his signature.

    When three Northern Nevada athletes took the top three spots in the state high jump competition last month, it was more than a coincidence. It was about a legacy and a coaching tree. The podium sweep was aided by a longtime high school coach who passed on his wealth of knowledge and love of coaching onto the current coaches. Leo Sambrano, who died in 2022, coached numerous athletes around Northern Nevada over his lifetime.

    The finish line for the Reno-Tahoe Odyssey was in a new location, but the team crossing it first remained the same for the fifth straight year. The Prominence Health team had the fastest time overall in the 178-mile relay race that begins and ends in downtown Reno, after circling Lake Tahoe and going through Virginia City. The 12-man Prominence team finished in 17 hours, 24 minutes, 32 seconds, after starting at 3 p.m. on Friday and finishing on Saturday morning.

    The Legion Sports Fest, featuring fitness models and bodybuilders, returns for its seventh year at the Reno-Sparks Convention Center on Saturday-Sunday, May 31-June 1. The expo will also have nine different sports competitions, a strongman competition and Muay Thai bouts. Competitions include NPC and IFBB Pro League Bodybuilding, Muay Thai, armored combat, point Muay Thai, strongman and strongwoman, sumo wrestling, arm wrestling ... and, yes, cornhole.

    Galena senior Eleanor Raker was named the track and field girls athlete of the year by the league coaches. Raker, who will compete for Air Force in the fall, won three events at the 5A-North Regional meet. Reno High senior Sydney Porter, who will run for Concordia University, was named the field athlete of the year. Spanish Springs senior Amaya Chapman, who will run for Nevada, is the track event athlete of the year.
