WINTERPORT, Maine (WABI) - Things turned contentious at times during a Winterport town meeting Tuesday night. Emotions ran high after the town council voted to withdraw a lease agreement from the Winterport Dragway Association. The council voted to award a new lease to Crystal Lancaster. Lancaster and her partner spoke during the meeting saying they plan to continue racing at Fernald Field and asked for people to support them.

BREWER, Maine (WABI) - Here’s something to smile about. Tuesday’s at the Brewer Community School are the highlight of the week for a group of student whose first language isn’t English. That’s in large part because of the bond they’ve formed with members of the Maine Women’s Basketball team. Paula Gallego and Ona Alarcón were born in Spain. They are among a group of players on the Maine Women’s Basketball team that make regular visits to the Brewer Community School.

Heavy rain and snow will sweep across Southern California late Wednesday, raising the risk of mudslides and flooding across the region, including the sites of January’s devastating fires. There is a 30% to 50% chance of flooding and debris flows in the area, said Devin Black, a National Weather Service meteorologist. Rainfall after midnight will likely reach one-half to three-quarters of an inch.

Three Maine radio stations owned by acclaimed author Stephen King are signing off for good at the end of the month.The Zone Corporation announced Monday morning that after 41 years of King’s ownership, Bangor area channels WZON (620 AM), WKIT (100.3 FM), and WZLO (103.1 FM) will sign off on Dec. 31.In a press release obtained by WABI, WMTW's media partner, King cited losses in the millions of dollars and his advancing age as reasons for the shutdown.

CLARKSVILLE — After struggling to put points on the scoreboard the first three weeks, the Class A No. 2 Providence Pioneers now appear to be getting into more of an offensive rhythm as they hit midseason. Coach Daniel McDonald's squad followed up a season-high 45 points in last week's win over Clarksville, with a 42-12 triumph over visiting Charlestown on Friday night at Murphy Stadium. The victory extended Providence's regular-season win streak to 14.
