COVINGTON, Ky. (WXIX) - A 10-year sentence was given to an 18-year-old after he pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter. Donte Rice Jr., now 18, was sentenced Tuesday for gunning down 14-year-old Amani Smith on Jan. 23, 2024. Rice, who was 17 at the time of the shooting, fired three gunshots at Smith near Latonia Elementary School in Covington, according to prosecutors. “This is a tragic case of youth killing youth,” described Judge Kathleen Lape.

Dohn Community High School parents trying to find placement for students after closure

CINCINNATI (WXIX) - Some Dohn Community High School parents say they are still trying to find another school for their students to attend after the abruptly closed Monday. Donna Davis says she’s still trying to find a school for her 7th grader, who was a student at Dohn Community High School. The school cited “insurmountable financial challenges” from the previous school year for the closure. The school originally said it would be closing in June. “It’s exhausting,” explained Davis.
Residents recall ‘very scary’ storm that brought tornado to Brown County

FAYETTEVILLE, Ohio (WXIX) - Residents in Brown County are trying to clean up the damage caused by a confirmed tornado that hit early Thursday. Several snapped power poles and downed power lines cover the area outside of Mindy Holden’s home Thursday. She says it wasn’t until the morning that she was able to see what damage the tornado left behind. “I couldn’t see beyond my porch,” Holden described.
Deceased man’s belongings thrown out before family could get them, brother says

FLORENCE, Ky. (WXIX/Gray News) - A Kentucky man says he is disappointed after he claims his deceased brother’s belongings were thrown away from an apartment complex. Kevin Shafer says his brother, Darrin Shafer, died on Feb. 4. Kevin Shafer said his brother had been living at Dixie Apartments in Florence for the past few years. Initially, Kevin Shafer said he was very pleased with how his brother’s death was handled, but that didn’t last long.

Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science students say they are concerned about the school’s current leadership and future. Founded in 1882 and located in Finneytown, CCMS, often referred to as “the Harvard of mortuary schools,” is the oldest college of its kind in the United States. A petition created by CCMS students has garnered almost 1,500 signatures and calls for a “vote of no confidence” in the college’s current leadership. “The morale is really low,” one student told FOX19 NOW.

CINCINNATI (WXIX/Gray News) – Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow’s home was broken into while the team was in Dallas playing the Cowboys during Monday Night Football, according to the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office. Specific details about the break-in have not been released, but the sheriff’s office said it happened sometime Monday night. The break-in at Burrow’s home comes not long after the NFL issued a security memo about recent home burglaries, the Associated Press reported on Nov. 21.
