The family behind one of America's biggest hotel fortunes is donating $25 million to the University of Utah, to give students the skills and experience to help them excel in the hospitality industry. The donation from the J. Willard and Alice S. Marriott Foundation will go to create the J.W. Marriott Jr. Institute. The institute is named for the chairman emeritus of Marriott International, the corporation that owns the Marriott, Sheraton, Westin, Ritz-Carlton and other hotel chains.

Two men died in downtown Salt Lake City early Tuesday morning, in what police say are the city's first and second homicides of 2025. According to a news release from the Salt Lake City police, dispatchers received a 911 call at about 12:33 a.m. near 171 W. 500 South, near the Comfort Inn Downtown, reporting a shooting. Officers arriving at the scene found two men with gunshot wounds, the news release said. Officers tried to treat the men and called for paramedics, but both men died at the scene.

Catholic Community Services of Utah says it may be forced to close its refugee resettlement program next year after it suffered a significant loss of federal funding under President Donald Trump's administration. "Unless there is a significant shift in federal support or funding streams are restored (along with refugee admissions to the country), the program will close," said Kearstin Fernandez, the organization's communications director, in a Friday email to The Salt Lake Tribune.
