The Australian southern bluefin tuna industry is celebrating the certification of its purse seine fishery as sustainable under the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) standard. It is a world-first for the species and the industry is describing it as a "significant milestone" due to the fact southern bluefin tuna was once severely overfished. Southern Bluefin Tuna Industry Association chief executive Daniel Casement said it was exciting to attain the certification after so many years.

A review into fish mortalities at a South Australian Research and Development Institute (SARDI) facility late last year has not brought about any answers, with the cause of the mortalities found to be inconclusive. About 70 per cent of the state's oyster spat, plus snapper larvae, barramundi broodstock and fingerlings were wiped out late last year at the West Beach facility.

A historic tuna boat has delivered thousands of litres of water to Taylor Island off the Eyre Peninsula for its 550 sheep. Plastic pipes and pumping systems were used to get the water to island, while the boat sat about 300 metres offshore. The Tacoma crew is planning another delivery this weekend to get the animals through until it rains.
