Arthur Miller essayed the soul-crushing weight of a life filled with profound regret in the perennially powerful “Death of a Salesman.” Thornton Wilder clarified the universality and humility of everyday life in the timeless “Our Town.” In neither case are judgments made by the writer. That’s the audience’s job.

Remember the pandemic? Here at River Towns Media we certainly do. In March 2020, just as events were being canceled, public gathering spaces were shutting down, and office workers and students were becoming shut-ins, we launched River Journal North (RJN) to serve the northern River Towns. Our plans were in place months before that fateful March precipitated the masking of America.

A Case for the Existence of God. That’s quite a weighty title for a compact, one-act two-hander that runs a swift and thoroughly engrossing 90 minutes. The Katonah Classic Stage production of Samuel D. Hunter’s award-winning play runs through Sunday, Nov. 3, at Whippoorwill Hall in North Castle Library in Armonk, N.Y. (katonahclassicstage.com). It was named Best Play of 2022 by the New York Drama Critics Circle. The title can be seen as both cryptic and arguably invested with a dual meaning.

As the audience had settled in their seats to take in the Harrison Players’ limited-run production of Sarah Ruhl’s Stage Kiss (in Harrison, N.Y.), I took note of one crew member on stage who was stretched out on a couch. That’s odd, I thought. As other stage hands began to move about, casually bantering with each other, I asked the person next to me, “Is it starting?” She said, “Yes, this is the play.” You could have fooled me. In fact, for a moment or two, it did fool me.
