The WA government has sought the help of two multinationals in a bid to halt a series of rolling blackouts impacting the state's mining heartland. Kalgoorlie-Boulder, 600 kilometres east of Perth, has been struck by repeated blackouts over more than a decade, leaving the town's 30,000 residents increasingly angered. The situation came to a head in January when a multi-day outage left residents queuing for fuel and scrambling for relief as temperatures reached into the high forties.

They say blood is thicker than water, and in Australia's gold mining capital of Kalgoorlie-Boulder where water has traditionally been considered more valuable than gold, residents are showing their true colour is red. Kalgoorlie-Boulder, 600 kilometres east of Perth, has been chosen by the Australian Red Cross as the first site for a trial of pop-up blood donation centres in regional Western Australia.

A population of one of Australia's rarest and most endangered marsupials is slowly recovering off Australia's southern coast. Middle Island, 820 kilometres south-east of Perth in the Recherche Archipelago, is home to a population of tiny Gilbert's potoroos. Originally thought to be extinct, the animals were rediscovered at Two People's Bay, near Albany, in 1994. With the estimated global population as low as 120, conservation and relocation efforts have been stepped up in recent years.
