The new interim supervisor for the Town of Hamburg, Cathy Rybczynski was appointed on Jan. 13. Brad Rybczynski was also appointed as town clerk. Both Brad and Cathy were sworn in, expressing their gratitude for the opportunity. “Thank you so much for all of the support for all of these years,” Cathy said. “It is my 25th year with the Town of Hamburg. The position of superintendent of public works has now been eliminated following a Jan. 13 reorganizational town meeting. Ken Kostowniak served as the superintendent of public works and the town engineer for three years, originally hired by former supervisor Randy Hoak. Councilmember Dan Kozub told The Sun that this decision was made as a “cost-saving measure.” The position held a salary of just over $100K a year.

Republicans offered an appointment of Patrick Sullivan to the working crew chief position in the Buildings and Grounds Department, as a permanent hire and not just temporary. This decision was made to an existing resolution that would have reinstated interim Rodney Pawlowski as the emergency working crew chief in the Buildings and Grounds Department for 35 more days until there was a full interview process.

The 183rd Erie County Fair has begun, with attractions, exhibits, and interactions catered for the whole family. According to the 2023 Fairgoers survey, fairgoers spend more time on the grounds than in previous years in 2023, and that, according to the fair’s chief marketing officer Alison Bukowski, is due to the hard work of the fair team to bring new events, experiences, performances, and food to the fair every year. The fair will be open for visitors every day until Sunday, Aug.

An annual tradition for many fairgoers is seeing the animals that travel from various farms across the region to compete in different showmanship categories. Every year, one of the largest displays of farm animals comes from a family farm from Boston, NY, Bit of Mischief Nigerian Dwarf Dairy Goats. The mother-daughter duo, Mary and Marea Palka, bring their goats to the Erie County Fair every year.

An oven and a dream. John and Morgan Popple’s dream of opening their bagel shop has come true, with a plan of opening their business, Bagel Jar in Hamburg in the fall. The Eden duo has been making bagels out of their house, and selling out every weekend at the Hamburg Farmers Market since 2020. John was an architect and Morgan was a teacher. Both worked nights after their full-time jobs making bagels.
