    A 36-year-old child rapist who vanished from the Tri-Cities 10 years ago is now headed to prison for his abuse. Alexander B. Callahan said Friday in Benton County County Superior Court that he thought he was making the right decision for his victim when he fled to Mexico and started a new life. But Deputy Prosecutor Anita Petra argued that his disappearance only added to the victim’s pain. “When children are (young), there’s hope .... (that) children can move on,” Petra said.

    What started with two people meeting for a fistfight turned into a melee in Richland’s Claybell Park Thursday, police said. Two people agreed to fight each other about 8:30 p.m. at the park located at 425 Broadmoor St., Richland police said in a Facebook post. This grew to more than 20 people gathering. Initial dispatch reports said multiple people appeared to be attacking one person. As the fight continued, someone pulled out a gun and fired three times into the air, Richland police said.

    A Tri-Cities 17-year-old was shot and wounded after he and some friends allegedly tried to sell a gun in a Kennewick parking lot then reportedly fled with the money. Noah R. Sanchez, 18, and Shaden K. Sullivan, 19, drove to a Columbia Center Boulevard business parking lot in a white Mercury about 5:30 p.m. Wednesday with plans to buy a gun from some 17-year-olds. When Sanchez and Sullivan handed over the money, the sellers took off with the money and gun in a black BMW.

    A homeless Kennewick man is in jail after allegedly punching a woman and grabbing her purse moments after she withdrew $250 from an ATM. A 24-year-old woman had gone to the Bank of America on the 3400 block of Kennewick Avenue shortly before 10 p.m. on Tuesday to get some cash, court documents said. Witnesses reported seeing a large man in black clothing run up to her. He demanded the money and then punched her in the face before stealing her purse, she told investigators.

    A 23-year-old man allegedly tried to steal a Kennewick school bus making its first stop to pick up a student Thursday morning. Cuevas Corona is accused of getting on the Kennewick school bus after it stopped on the 400 block of North Volland Street about 8:10 a.m., Kennewick police said in a Facebook post. The driver told investigators that Cuevas Corona sat down behind the driver who worried what the man was going to do.

We have heard a lot about how @mcclatchy loves it's journalists. But unless they pay fairly then it's just words. Do better. We are the ones who make sure you have news to print. It's time for @mcclatchy to bargain fair with @OneHeraldGuild.
