Two day workshop in October, which focussed on mental health and neuroscience, builds on existing partnership with these leading international institutions. Over the 01 and 02 of October 2024, IoPPN held a 2-day workshop with the National University of Singapore and the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR) supported by King’s College London Global Engagement, NUS and A*Star, with the aim of discussing synergies in research and opportunities for staff mobility and training.

A new study, conducted in a shared effort between UK and Italian researchers offers novel insights about the biological mechanisms behind major depressive disorder (MDD), and especially on the role of the immune system. The study specifically analysed “gene expression”, the process by which the instructions that are held in our genes are expressed, influencing bodily functions.

I have been prescribing antidepressants since 1991. Like most medications, they are imperfect tools: they have side-effects and don’t work for everybody. Some patients report negative effects, or that their depression does not improve, and they may require changing to a different antidepressant. For those they do help, antidepressants undoubtedly improve depression and reduce the risk of suicide.
