KGNU went live on May 22, 1978, but the alternative radio station was years in the making. It began with a class offered through Boulder’s Community Free School in 1973, called “A Desperate Attempt to Start an FM Radio Station — Part 1,” according to news articles. Some 30 people showed up. One was Glen Gerberg who would become KGNU’s first station manager. Frustration with the University of Colorado’s failure to start a commercial-free FM station was one of the reasons that fueled the effort.

Who claimed the land we now know as Boulder? From archaeological evidence as well as oral histories, we know that Indigenous people have lived in Boulder for more than 13,000 years. All told, some fifty modern tribes were in Colorado before white settlement. For hundreds of years, Ute territory and hunting grounds spanned all of Colorado and beyond. The Cheyenne and Arapaho migrated down from the Great Lakes region sometime around the 1700s.

Back in the 1940s, university students didn’t require fancy housing. They made do with what was around them. Some lived in dormitories or Greek houses, and many students rented a room in a family home on University Hill, furnished with just a bed, dresser, desk and a good reading lamp. Quite a few students lived in boardinghouses. Longtime Boulder resident Elaine Clow Larson, now 98, arrived in 1945 to attend CU Boulder, she remembered in a recent interview.

The Progressive Era, 1890-1920, was vibrant with reforms and programs designed to create a more equitable and healthier society. The era followed the Gilded Age, when industrialists flaunted their wealth alongside the extreme poverty of others. Many groups rallied to help our community become a better place to live during this time. LiteracyWomen’s groups started advocating for a library in the late 1800s. Several reading rooms were already established, but some required payment.

Fred Gowdy and Marvin Graves, charismatic lead singers for the Freddi-Henchi Band, had a significant impact on Boulder in the 1970s. Freddi was Fred Gowdy, and Marvin Graves was Henchi — a shortened form of henchman, his nickname from college wrestling. The band first performed in Colorado in the late 1960s, after founding the funk and soul group, also known as Freddi-Henchi and the Soulsetters, in Phoenix.
