FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTUU) - A State Department spokesperson confirmed Friday that U.S. officials are “aware” of reports former Fairbanks priest, the Rev. Alphonsus Afina, was kidnapped in Nigeria. The Diocese of Fairbanks said earlier this week that its counterparts at a diocese in Nigeria told them the militant Jihadist group Boko Haram is responsible for Afina’s disappearance.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) - The Anchorage Police Department is warning residents of a text message scam involving communications that claim the Division of Motor Vehicles is demanding payment for fake “fines.”Police said in a Facebook post that these messages are asking people who receive the scam messages to pay the fabricated fines by clicking a false link. The messages claim vehicle registrations and driving privileges will be suspended if payments are not made.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) - An Anchorage middle-schooler emerged victorious this week in a statewide civics contest. Middle school students from across Alaska gathered at Bear Tooth Theatrepub in Anchorage Wednesday for the 2025 National Civics Bee state finals. Students got to test their knowledge on the United States government, U.S. history, and current political issues for a chance to win cash prizes. Alaska’s 2025 winner was Mariella Mendoza, an eighth-grader from Romig Middle School.

This year, they will be painting two homes in two days. Organizers say the annual occasion helps serve Anchorage’s senior, veteran, and disabled neighbors, and many of the sponsors enjoy coming back.

CHICKEN, Alaska (KTUU) - Yukon Highways and Public Works announced that the Top of the World Highway and its Alaska/Canada border are now open for the summer season. The highway is the northernmost border crossing road in the state, sitting roughly 100 miles further north than the more popular Alaska Highway border crossing.
