The state Supreme Court has struck a blow to the Republican-led Legislature, saying lawmakers can’t hold up the Attorney General from finalizing settlements in some lawsuits. In a decision issued Tuesday, the court said when the lawsuit involves things like civil enforcement — things like environmental protection, consumer protection, financial regulation, and medical assistance programs — the state’s top prosecutor doesn’t need to ask for permission to move forward.

MADISON, Wis (CIVIC MEDIA) – Attorney General Josh Kaul and a coalition of states won a court order that blocks the Trump Administration from eliminating Wisconsin programs that provide social services. A Wisconsin Department of Justice (DOJ) news release details that the administration is ordered to restore programs and members of AmeriCorps, a national program that aims to address the needs of various communities.

MADISON, Wis (CIVIC MEDIA) – The U.S. Supreme Court has ruled a charity doesn’t have to pay state unemployment taxes, overruling a previous decision by Wisconsin’s Supreme Court. According to the State Journal, the Catholic Charities Bureau has paid Wisconsin unemployment taxes for about 50 years, even though other faith groups are exempt. State officials argued the group didn’t quality for that exemption because its work doesn’t include religious teachings and it’s largely funded by the public.

Wisconsin Tourism Secretary Anne Sayers remarked that the state has lost out on a lot of opportunities because productions don’t want to film in the state due to a lack of a film credit.
