Gauteng police say the principal was shot and wounded after he reportedly instructed a group of pupils who sat in the foyer to take out their workbooks to study. Gauteng Department of Education spokesperson Steve Mabona said the grade 6 pupil allegedly did not take the instructions kindly, but the principal ignored him. The 51-year-old principal was rushed to a nearby hospital.

CAPE TOWN - While the Western and Eastern Cape are experiencing gale-force winds, rain and rough sea conditions, authorities in the Northern Cape are battling raging wildfires. The provincial cooperative governance department said teams from the Mgcawu district municipality were working around the clock to extinguish the blaze. Two helicopters were deployed to the area to assist with firefighting efforts. The fire has been raging since last week.

CAPE TOWN - The Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) said it believes government should intervene, following September's massive fuel price increase. At midnight on Wednesday, petrol rose by R1.71 a litre and diesel by R2.76. Cosatu's Matthew Parks said this is a major blow to all South Africans.
