The South African Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA) says it has begun a nationwide Fishing Vessel Safety Audit campaign to improve safety standards, promote regulatory compliance, and reduce the number of maritime incidents. It says 10% of the vessels have been audited thus far. Most of the fleet is aging and not ideal for saving lives. SAMSA Acting CEO, Mbalenhle Golding says the preliminary audit results show a number of instances of non-compliance.

Students from Stellenbosch University have initiated a project at Tygerberg Hospital in Cape Town to assist in making organ donation more effective. Launching the NGO, Save Seven, what started as a small project has turned into a fully-fledged specialised intensive care unit designed to provide life support to consented organ donors. Each organ donor has the potential to save seven lives with major organs, such as the kidneys and heart, and assist a further 52 others with tissue donation.

Members of the rugby fraternity have gathered at the Boland Stadium in Wellington, Western Cape for a memorial service for the late Springbok, Cornal Hendricks. Hendricks died at the age of 37 after a suffering a heart attack last week. He played for Roses United, the Bulls and the Springboks. Hendricks will be laid to rest in Wellington on Sunday. Boland coach, Havies Fourie, says he was a fierce competitor.

Agri Western Cape says commercial farmers exporting to the United States of America will be hard hit if the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) agreement with America is not renewed. President Cyril Ramaphosa is heading a delegation to the US to discuss, among others, trade and tariff agreements. The AGOA grants preferential access to the US market for qualifying exports from South Africa which includes citrus fruit and wines.

Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis has announced a R10 billion investment to expand the MyCiTi bus service. He visited construction sites in Claremont and Duinefontein, where new routes worth R7 billion are underway. The major routes affected include Imam Haron Road, Stanhope Road, and First Avenue, leading towards the M5. Once complete, the new routes will link commuters from Mitchells Plain, Khayelitsha, Claremont, and Wynberg.
