    The Western Cape government has welcomed the gradual lifting of the ban on vegetable exports to Botswana. Provincial Minister of Agriculture, Dr Ivan Meyer says the unbanning will encourage fair trade between SADC partners in a mutually beneficial relationship. Botswana will be lifting the ban in two phases on about 16 vegetable types like pumpkin, broccoli, sweet potatoes and green beans among others. The second phase of the un-banning is expected from the first of April.

    The pre-trial hearing in the case of the disappearance of six-year-old Joslin Smit is expected to get underway in the High Court in Cape Town today. The girl’s mother Kelly Smith, her boyfriend Jacquin Appollis and Steveno van Rhyn face charges of kidnapping and human trafficking. Smith reported her daughter missing in the Middelpos informal settlement in Saldanha Bay in February last year. She had told police that Joslin had been left in the care of Appollis while she was at work.

    Three gang members have been sentenced to life terms each for the murder of a rival gang member in Lavender Hill on the Cape Flats. The High Court in Cape Town also sentenced them to five years each for the illegal possession of firearms and ammunition. The Hawks say Achmat Gaffoor was shot dead while Waseem Wilson sustained gunshot injuries in May 2020. Both were members of the Flakka Kids gang.
