Few Black players on college softball rosters

College softball in Minnesota and elsewhere remains primarily White. Annual NCAA data show six percent of softball players are Black — it was five percent from 2014 to 2019. The MSR last weekend, in separate games, talked to the only three Blacks on the state’s two Division I softball teams. One starts at Minnesota, and two are first-year players at St. Thomas.

Abe Woldeslassie, a Macalester College grad who came back to coach the men’s basketball team for seven seasons, has resigned to take an assistant coaching position at Division I University of Denver. He was the school’s first Black MBB coach, and was the MIAC’s only Black head basketball coach.

Minnesota and Illinois in women’s tennis have met 32 times since 1991. However, the 33rd meeting on April 11 was the first time ever that both schools’ squads were coached by Black women. Lois Arterberry (Minnesota) and Gabrielle Moore (Indiana) once were college teammates at Southern University, an HBCU. “I was a junior when she came in,” said Arterberry of Moore.
High school girls flag football league begins in Minnesota

On Sunday, April 27, the state’s first high school girls flag football league begins its season with 51 high schools competing on five consecutive Sundays this spring. A year after the Minnesota Vikings piloted a four-team high school program in 2024, including a 12-game regular season and a championship game at the team’s Eagan practice field, the NFL club this year will contribute $600,000 to support the new league and the participating high schools.

After attending Minnesota at USC earlier this past season, I was totally impressed with a large showing of Blacks in attendance. Never in my five decades-plus of covering the women Gophers have I seen more than small pockets of Blacks, most of them players’ parents, at games in The Barn.
