A federal judge on Friday (Jan. 31) temporarily blocked enforcement of a state law, passed last year, that creates a buffer zone around police, making it a criminal offense to come within 25 feet of a working officer after being ordered to step back. The preliminary injunction was issued in response to a lawsuit filed in July by six media companies, including Verite News’ parent company Deep South Today, asking for the law to be blocked.

After more than a decade under federal oversight, the New Orleans Police Department will finally have a chance to prove that it can police itself, a judge ruled Tuesday (Jan. 14). Since 2013, the NOPD has been under an expansive consent decree, intended to reshape virtually every aspect of the agency, with court-appointed monitors closely tracking its progress. Now, U.S. District Judge Susie Morgan’s ruling will allow the department to enter a two-year “sustainment” period — effective immediately.

The New Orleans City Council launched a formal investigation on Thursday (Jan. 9) into the city’s handling of its street barrier systems, which are meant to deter the type of terrorist attack that occurred on Bourbon Street early on New Year’s Day.
