Two Chinese nationals were convicted in Cumberland County court Friday of using a chain of massage parlors to run lucrative, black market sex businesses. Jurors found Zigui Zheng and Yan Qiu, both of Flushing, N.Y., guilty of sex trafficking, promoting prostitution, participating in a corrupt organization and other charges. Only Zheng was present for this week’s trial; Qiu, who had jumped bail and been unresponsive to her attorney, was tried and convicted in absentia.

Middlesex Township supervisors have opened the door to a large-scale data center project — potentially Cumberland County’s first — with a zoning map change. The board voted 3-0 Friday to adopt land use rules for data centers that would apply to 694 acres of currently undeveloped land off Country Club Road. The site is about 5 miles northeast of Carlisle and is bounded on the north by the Conodoguinet Creek.

Troy Beam lost his job for barging into three Cumberland County polling places with dire warnings about rigged voting machines in November 2023. But he didn’t commit a crime. So said a Cumberland County jury Tuesday as they voted to acquit Beam of six misdemeanor counts of using his powers to try to interfere with voting day processes at three Shippensburg-area precincts.

Cumberland County District Attorney Sean McCormack’s continuing campaign against sex trafficking at massage parlors resulted in jail terms for three West Shore operators Monday. Two other defendants face criminal trials this week. The sentences handed down by Judge Christylee Peck are believed to be the first in which spa operators have been sent to jail.
