Data exclusively obtained by the Echo shows Essex County Council shelled out £217,235 in pothole compensation payments in the last financial year. Of that, £47,709 was for more 100 reports of vehicles being damaged by potholes. However, the highest pay-outs uncovered by Newsquest were all for injuries. The largest went to a pedestrian who tripped over a pothole in Mountnessing Road, Billericay, in September 2023. In August 2024, they were paid £27,500.

She had taken what a coroner described as “dangerous, excessive amounts of powerful drugs” – one an opioid painkiller, the other an epilepsy drug. Mrs Stewart had struggled with homelessness, alcohol and drug addiction and the death of her daughter, an inquest heard last Friday (May 23).

Henry Kwadwo Boafo Donkor, 40, was found dead by a support worker at a property in Romford Road on February 3. An inquest was opened into his death on Wednesday, May 28, after East London Coroner’s Court received the results of toxicology tests from a pathologist.
