David Sandground, 80, of Clements Road, died at Newham Hospital after suffering an aneurysm. His medical cause of death was haemorrhagic shock – meaning significant blood loss – caused by a ruptured iliac artery aneurysm. An iliac artery aneurysm is a bulge in the wall of an artery in the pelvis, which carries blood away from the heart. The bulge can grow and potentially burst, causing blood to leak out into the body instead of being pumped around and carrying oxygen.

The discovery was made not by police officers but by his own sister, a court has heard. Robert Wright, 68, was found dead at his home in Squirrels Heath Road, Romford, having seemingly taken his own life. “The circumstances of the discovery of the deceased were that welfare checks were ongoing,” senior coroner Graeme Irvine told East London Coroner’s Court. “Mr Wright had been reported as a missing person to the Metropolitan Police Service. Enquiries had been ongoing.

MPs published a report today (May 23) saying Karen Kneller’s position as chief executive of the Criminal Cases Review Commission (CCRC) was untenable. Jason Moore, currently serving life for a murder he insists he did not commit, welcomed the report, saying the CCRC had left him “in the depths of despair”. “Innocent people and their families pinned their hopes on these people for justice,” he said via his sister Kirstie.

This paper reported last week how staff at East London Coroner’s Court had spent 24 work hours trying unsuccessfully to secure a post-mortem examination for three-year-old Ahsanul Hoque Izyan. Senior coroner Graeme Irvine blamed the delays on years of chronic underfunding of pathology services. He admonished the office manager of Dagenham and Rainham MP Margaret Mullane in open court for writing to his staff and asking them to speed the process up.
