TAZEWELL COUNTY, Va. (WVVA) - On Thursday night a list was released by the Department of Homeland Security calling out “sanctuary jurisdictions” across the nation” published under Executive Order 14287 by the Trump Administration. These jurisdictions allegedly undermine the law and obstruct enforcement of immigration laws. Tazewell county was among the localities listed, which was a surprise to local and federal leaders.

PAYNESVILLE, W.Va. (WVVA) - An investigation is under way into the theft of bronze veteran markers that had been placed on graves in a McDowell County family cemetery. Five of these government-issued markers, each 24 inches long and 12 inches wide, had been bolted into place on the graves of veterans who had served in wars. But they are now gone. McDowell County Sheriff James Muncy said the thefts at the Ambrose-Mullens Cemetery in Paynesville over the Memorial Day weekend outraged him.

BECKLEY, W.Va. (WVVA) - A Honduran man has been sentenced after pleading guilty to an immigration crime in federal court. Nolvin Alfredo-Diaz, 42, was arrested in August 2024 in Lewisburg by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Beckley, Alfredo-Diaz had been removed from the United State twice before after entering illegally, once in 2006 and again in 2010, both after drug-related convictions.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WVVA) - A proposed rate hike by Appalachian Power that was dismissed last fall is back on the agenda, with a new case filing asking the West Virginia Public Service Commission (PSC) for an average residential rate increase of16.16 percent. The filing, if approved by the PSC, would add more than $27 a month to current average monthly bills and produce annual revenue of about $250 million. However, any rate increase must first be approved by the PSC.

Tazewell Va. (WVVA) - A $350,000 grant from the Tobacco Commission will go toward the completion of a new meat-packing facility in Tazewell County. When complete, the 7,500-sq-ft plant will be leased to a private operator, Blue Ridge Butchery, which will use two lines to process beef, pork, lamb and chicken.
