VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — The Virginia Beach Police Department is a step closer to using drones to help respond to incidents. City Council voted Tuesday to give the department $1.3 million to go toward implementing its “Drone as a First Responder Pilot Program.” “As technology, we’re going to keep investing, it’s becoming integrated in everything that we do,” Police Chief Paul Neudigate said during an April 15 presentation to council.

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) – The Red Cross is calling for blood donations amid a challenging time of year for the organization. Jonathan McNamara, the communications director for the Red Cross of Virginia, explained that the need for blood is always there, but during the summer months that need becomes even greater. “There’s a shortage of donors and an increase in demand,” McNamara said. He added that it doesn’t matter what type of blood you have, you have a chance to make a difference.

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — A new grant program is hoping to light up the downtown area of Portsmouth. The Executive Director of the Portsmouth Partnership, Michelle Wren, said the area used to be lit up. The organization is hoping to bring that back with their recently launched “Safe and Secure Downtown” Program. It works in two ways and will be in place between the 100 and 700 blocks of High Street. First, they plan to light the trees in the median of the street.
