COLORADO, USA — While tornadoes are not unusual in Colorado, the strength of those that hit the state on Sunday stands out. Three of the twisters — two near Bennett, about five to 10 miles southeast of Denver International Airport, and another in the Elkhorn Ranch neighborhood of far northwestern Elbert County — were both classified as EF2. A fourth tornado was classified as EF1.

The drought monitor, which is updated every Thursday, shows the benefits of the precipitation received on Tuesday and Wednesday of last week.

DENVER — As the summer wildfire season approaches, Colorado is facing a potentially severe outlook due to drastically low snowpack levels, the lowest the state has seen since 2018. Current snowpack is less than half of what it should be, placing the state at increased risk for wildfires. Typically, April through mid-May brings consistent snow events that replenish snowpack. This year, however, only one notable snow event occurred during that period.

DENVER — Denver could get its first 90-degree day of 2025 on Monday, with temperatures forecast to reach 87 degrees – just shy of the daily record of 90. If the city hits 90 degrees, it would mark an unusually early start to the summer heat. Denver’s average first 90-degree day is June 10. The earliest on record was April 30, 1992, while the latest was July 21, 1967.

On May 8, 2017, a severe storm swept through the west side of the Denver metro area and caused an estimated $2.3 billion in damage, earning the distinction of the second costliest hailstorm in U.S. history.
