Chipeta, wife of Uncompahgre Ute Tribe Chief Ouray, used her relationship and status to seek nonviolent solutions to those struggles. "She was a peacemaker, and worked as a diplomat," said Cat Jensen, the education coordinator at the Center for Colorado Women's History. They know Chipeta's story well.
