Curious Elixirs has been an industry leader in the world of nonalcoholic beverages and cocktails, and it’s definitely not just something for Dry January anymore. Between “California sober” substitutions and a younger generation that doesn't value alcohol as much as its counterparts, the N/A sector is becoming more and more important. So the timing is good for Curious Elixirs to bring the largest coast-to-coast booze-free party back to Nashville next week on Wednesday, May 14.

While I celebrate the many great chefs who have moved to Nashville in the past decade, I do occasionally think about the ones who got away. Kaelin Ulrich Trilling was definitely on the fast track here in Nashville before Thomas Keller snatched him up to open La Calenda in Yountville, Calif. Trilling is the son of the recently departed expert of Oaxacan cuisine Susana Trilling, and has since moved on to new ventures. But we miss him in Nashville.

I once asked a bartender friend why I should pay $14 for a top-shelf margarita when the house-special version was only $5 during happy hour. He told me to sit down while he used fresh-squeezed juices, good tequila and Cointreau to make a delightful, citrusy treat that he shook with ice until it was cold and frothy. He slid it across the bar to me, then reached underneath the rail. “That’s a good margarita," he said.

April is one of my favorite months because it’s when one of my favorite distilleries releases its annual special anniversary blend. The 13th edition of Chattanooga Whiskey's Founder’s Blend hit the shelves on April 11 this year, and it is definitely a worthy addition to the history of the business. In fact, it was named Icons of Whisky - Craft Producer of the Year (both America and Global) at Whisky Magazine's 2023 World Whiskies Awards.
