The cousin of the suspect accused of raping and killing Rachel Morin in 2023 testified during the fifth day of testimony Thursday. Jose Hernandez, the cousin of Victor Martinez-Hernandez, said that his cousin reached out under the Facebook profile name “Fernando Ismael” in December 2023 and told him he had nowhere to live. Jose allowed for Victor to stay in the living room of their family’s apartment in Temple Hills. Jose said that Victor did not pay rent or help pay bills and it caused problems.

Multiple witnesses testified Wednesday at the Harford County Circuit Court in the trial of the man accused of killing Rachel Morin. Morin, 37, a mother of five, went for a jog on the Ma and Pa Trail in August 2023. Authorities found her body on Aug. 6, 2023, along the trail. Kyle Stacy, a witness, said he walked the trail on Aug. 5, 2023, with his girlfriend and dog around 6 p.m. He said he heard a branch snap and that’s when he made eye contact for two seconds with a man in the woods.

During an announcement about Baltimore’s Spring Cleanup and Day of Service, Mayor Brandon Scott discussed the city’s process of revamping vacant homes. City and Maryland leaders are expediting the process to help rid the city of vacant properties. The move is part of the Reinvest Baltimore Initiative, which provides public and nonprofit partners with grants to address vacant properties around the city.

This week in Annapolis, the Environment and Transportation Committee will take up multiple bills. However, no legislation related to the Red Line will be discussed. The Red Line would provide a transit connection between the Woodlawn area of Baltimore County and the West Baltimore communities to places East like Canton and Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center. Maryland Gov. Wes Moore said he’s still a big believer that they need to have enhanced east-west transit in Baltimore.

Maryland will now be the only state in the country without a flying mission, according to a new report from the Washington Post. A White House official on Friday said Maryland will not be getting a squadron of fighter jets from the District of Columbia Air National Guard, as previously promised.
