A lawsuit filed by the attorney who represented Chippewa County Sheriff Travis Hakes will move forward. Attorney Richard Hodsdon is asking Chippewa County to pay $27,753.37 plus interest for providing legal fees on behalf of Hakes. Hodsdon, who is based out of Stillwater, Minn., claims the county is liable for breach of contract. On Friday, Eau Claire County Judge Sarah Harless rejected a motion to dismiss the case, and she ruled that Hodsdon’s breach of contract claim could move forward.

Officials from Flock Safety Cameras met with the Chippewa Falls public safety committee on Monday, showing the potential benefits of having their surveillance cameras placed along busy traffic corridors in the city. Trevor Chandler, a San Francisco-based Flock lobbyist, said they now have 1,300 employees and have cameras in more than 5,000 municipalities. The cameras capture images of license plates and enter them into a national database.

A former Lafayette man who fired a gun into a wall that entered another residence has been convicted, but he will not serve any jail time. Devan Van Aarde, 32, now of Baraboo, entered a no contest plea last week in Chippewa County Court to one count of reckless use of a firearm. Van Aarde lived at 19041 65th Ave. in rural Chippewa Falls at the time of the shooting in August 2023.

CHIPPEWA FALLS — A former Chippewa Falls man who was driving drunk and struck another vehicle and fled the scene in March 2023 has been sentenced to serve 2½ years in prison. John R. Kolstad, 34, appeared Monday in Chippewa County Court via video from Oshkosh Correctional Facility, where he entered no contest pleas to OWI-6, possession of drug paraphernalia, criminal trespass to property and bail jumping. All other charges, including hit-and-run, were read-in and dismissed.

CHIPPEWA FALLS — Brian Maki, who has worked in promotions in the Chippewa Valley for more than 20 years, was named Monday as the new executive director of the Northern Wisconsin State Fair. Maki has worked at both the Eau Claire Leader-Telegram and the Chippewa Herald. Rusty Volk, who has served as executive director since 2008, will retire effective Jan. 1.
