AVERY COUNTY — The Easter holiday was celebrated this past weekend, as many groups, churches and organizations gathered to recognize the special occasion. Saturday was a busy day for many, starting with Mount Victory hosting its Spring Fling, featuring a 10,000 Easter egg drop from a helicopter.

AVERY COUNTY — Avery County Government recently announced that its Senior Center operations are planned to be moved temporarily to Elk Park. The county entered into a purchase agreement for a building/property at 8060 US Hwy 19E in Elk Park that will serve as the temporary facility for the Avery County Senior Center after being approved by Avery County Commissioners in a special meeting last week about the subject. Commissioners approved the offer and budget amendment totaling $302,500.

NEWLAND - Country music star Eric Church and North Carolina Gov. Josh Stein recently broke ground on the new "Blue Haven" site in Newland alongside other partners. Blue Haven is where more than 45 homes will be built, part of Church's promise to construct 100 homes for Hurricane Helene victims after a major concert in Charlotte raised more than $24 million. The ceremony began with a welcome from Chief Cares CEO John Blackburn before introducing Avery Long Term Recovery Group member Ruth Shirley.

NEWLAND — Avery High School Drama students had a successful showing of its 2025 production “All Shook Up” April 10 to 13. A project that has been in the works since school began with coming back from the flood. “All Shook Up” is a “jukebox musical” based on the music of Elvis Presley in which the drama utilized the music of “The King of Rock and Roll,” fitting them into a story.

AVERY COUNTY — Avery native Dillion Moody has been named the new “Smoke Chaser” for Avery County in the NC Forest Service. Moody, born and raised in the Plumtree area, is excited about the new opportunity. “I’ve always wanted to be involved with the Forest Service, and forest management,” said Moody. A “smoke chaser” is an employee who responds to wildfires during the spring and fall fire seasons.
