CHARLESTON, WV (WOWK) — While at the ribbon cutting for a Niterra distribution center in Sissonville Friday, Senator Shelley Moore Capito spoke on the layoffs at NIOSH. Capito said she spoke with Robert F. Kennedy Jr., the secretary of Health and Human Services, twice about NIOSH, which she credits with bringing back jobs dealing with inhalation issues affecting coal miners and black lung.

CHARLESTON, WV (WOWK) — A street is closed after a structure caught fire in Charleston Saturday afternoon. Metro 911 said the fire was reported around 2:22 p.m. at a commercial building on Tennessee Avenue. Charleston Fire Department Assistant Chief Mark Strickland told a 13 News reporter on the scene that the fire was called in by an off duty fire marshal. When crews arrived on scene, there was fire in the back of the building on the first and second stories.

PUTNAM COUNTY, WV (WOWK) — Heavy traffic has been reported on I-64 Westbound and Teays Valley Road between Hurricane and Teays Valley Saturday afternoon. The Winfield Police Department reported on the traffic in a Facebook post around 12:54 p.m., but WV511 says traffic is still heavily congested at this time. Putnam County Dispatch said there is road construction in the affected area. Winfield PD asks that people use caution and find alternate routes if possible.

The free carnival was held in Huntington for kids, and kids at heart, to celebrate 129 years of the Children’s Home Society (CHS) of West Virginia serving vulnerable children.

CHARLESTON, WV (WOWK) — A summertime staple in the Kanawha Valley that celebrates 35 years this year. At the same time, Multifest is also facing some serious financial challenges. On Wednesday, organizers announced the lineup for this year’s event , which runs from August 7-10. The schedule isn’t complete though because of funding issues. Organizers said that changes to DEI mean some grant funding opportunities that they have normally counted are no longer available.
