    HUNTINGTON — United Way of the River Cities is tackling period poverty with its Week of Action 2025. Period poverty refers to a lack of access to menstruation products, which are essential. This lack of access can lead to missed school or work, health risks, increased stigma and shame surrounding menstruation. The Week of Action, June 16-21, is an annual event at UWRC, but this is the second year in a row it’s focused on period poverty.

    HUNTINGTON — Strawberry Pie Week, May 13 to 17, is back at Jim’s Steak and Spaghetti for the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic. In previous years, customers have lined up around the block, as Jim's often sold more than 10,000 slices during the week. It was cancelled in recent years due to not having enough staff.     ASHLAND — UK King’s Daughters Medical Center officially opened its new main entrance this month. Staff and patients will begin to move in over the next few weeks. The project cost $160 million. Construction started in September 2022. The building is on the Ashland main campus along Central Avenue between 22nd and 24th streets. Central Avenue was converted to a two-way street in partnership with the City of Ashland.

    HUNTINGTON — Juniors and seniors at Cabell Midland High School and Wayne High School have an opportunity to experience working in the health care field before graduation: the Med Explorers program or MedEx through the Education Alliance of West Virginia. The second class of students was officially signed to the two-year program Friday. They must apply and interview to be considered. Juniors do a job shadow and seniors go into a paid internship.
