Shakespeare season starts early this year. Summertime is usually when “The Bard” fever kicks in, with outdoor productions of William Shakespeare plays throughout Connecticut. A couple of regional and college theaters are ending their regular seasons in April with Shakespeare plays, and a couple of other events are on tap to keep the iambic pentameter flowing. Most of these events fall on or near April 23, which is widely considered to be the date of William Shakespeare’s birth in 1564.

“Primary Trust,” Eboni Booth’s 2024 Pulitzer-winning play getting its Connecticut premiere at TheaterWorks Hartford through May 11, is outwardly about a guy trying to get and keep a job while maintaining some key relationships in his life. But this tragedy-tinged comic drama is really about the rigors of maintaining one’s mental health and balance. The play is a study of quiet steady self-maintenance.
