    Alberni District Secondary School is closed Thursday due to a fire. The Pacific Rim School District says there was a fire in the high school’s mechanical room early in the morning on May 8, 2025. “The fire has been put out and the fire department has verified there are no other hot spots,” says a notice posted on the school’s website. Students who were picked up by a school bus will be returned home.

A police major crimes unit is investigating the death of a man discovered by firefighters at about 10 a.m. on April 26 as they were putting out a fire at the 49-unit residence. Waterview, located at Gorge Road East and Washington Avenue, is operated by Pacifica Housing .

    A woman who police say falsely claimed to be a registered nurse and worked on Vancouver Island has been arrested in the United States and is scheduled to appear in court in Victoria on Monday. Charrybelle Talaue was charged last year on multiple counts of fraud, forgery, and personation after allegedly misrepresenting herself as a registered nurse. The offences are believed to have started in December 2023 and occurred across the Capital Regional District, Central Saanich police said.
