British Columbia's chief coroner is taking the unusual step of not calling an inquest into the death of Lisa Rauch, who died after being hit by two plastic bullets fired by a Victoria police officer. While an inquest is mandatory after deaths in police custody, Coroner Dr. Jatinder Baidwan says in a statement that Rauch wasn't considered in custody at the time of her death. The statement says the decision was made after considering the wishes of the woman's family.

A man seen speeding on a Jet Ski towards a pod of Pacific white sided dolphins has been fined $5,000 and has been banned from posting anything related to marine mammals on social media. The man was found guilty last November in B.C. provincial court for violating marine mammal regulations after his trial heard he raced towards the pod and came within metres of them while filming on his cellphone.

The University of Victoria is poised to change its non-academic misconduct policy to encourage students to call for help in substance-use medical emergencies, with the reassurance they won’t face repercussions. The change approved by the university’s senate last week will remove references to drug use or possession from the definition of non-academic misconduct. Manufacturing, sale or distribution for monetary gain of illegal or prescription drugs would continue to be misconduct.

A Victoria addictions doctor hopes new standards for overdose-prevention sites will restart plans for such services at three Island hospitals. “It’s imperative that these sites be set up as soon as possible in order to enable very ill patients to stay at hospitals and get the treatment they need,” said Dr. Caroline Ferris, former medical lead for mental health and substance use addiction medicine for Island Health.

New imaging technology for prostate-cancer patients as well as a new drug for those with late-stage disease will be available this month in Victoria, allowing for faster and more precise imaging and treatment. “This is huge for Vancouver Island,” said radiation oncologist Dr. Abraham Alexander, noting about 4,165 men in the province will be diagnosed with prostate cancer this year.
