Critics are lining up against an Island Health plan to shift mental-health and addictions beds for children and youth to the adult facility at Royal Jubilee Hospital’s Eric Martin Pavilion. The pavilion, which opened in 1970, offers withdrawal management, stabilization and outpatient care for adults with severe and complex mental illness. Admitted psychiatric patients are in Royal Jubilee’s patient care centre.

On the ninth anniversary of toxic-drug overdoses being declared a public-health emergency in B.C., Health Minister Josie Osborne says there is “much more to do” to end the crisis. More than 16,000 people have died as a result of toxic drugs — contaminated mostly by fentanyl and carfentanil— since the emergency was declared in 2016.
