It is costing a lot more to put on Creative Chaos. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the highly popular artisan market that will take over the Vernon recreation complex June 6 to 8. It will also be the last year year Chaos will be held at the rec centre. Organizer Ingrid Baron said City of Vernon rental fees for the non-profit society have gone up 32 per cent this year. Baron said they were also informed they would no longer be allowed to set up the food court on the outdoor Centennial Rink.

Fawning season is underway in the B.C. Interior and a Vernon wildlife expert has stern advice for anyone coming across a baby deer. “Leave them alone,” said Pete Wise. “I can't emphasize that enough.”Wise said it is not uncommon for a mother deer to leave a fawn for an extended period of time and he has already started getting calls about fawns that people think have been abandoned by their mothers. “Mom puts them there and she goes off to feed and that fawn is quite capable of staying there.

While many people are planning to kick back for the summer, Shanda Hill has other ideas. The Vernon ultra athlete has numerous back-to-back races planned for the next few weeks. “My goal this year is to do every race on the (International Ultra Triathlon Association) calendar,” Hill told Castanet. “That will give the equivalent of 51 iron-distance triathlons.”She would break the current record of 48. And that means a lot races in a short period of time.

Jayda Hatch dreams of one day becoming a pilot. But that journey for the 19-year-old Vernon woman took a sudden and unexpected turn when she was diagnosed with a brain bleed. To help her family in these trying times her uncle, Chris Stevens, has launched a GoFundMe campaign. Earlier in May, Jayda, who is from Vernon and her family still lives here, became seriously ill and went to the ER in Medicine Hat.
