In the fall of 2021, Eric Williams was driving his two elementary-aged daughters to a back-to-school event when he came to a stop at a traffic light. “A second later, I heard a boom force which shot me into the middle of the intersection,” he said. A Philadelphia Police officer driving a marked SUV rear-ended him, totaling his car. Williams and his daughters went to the hospital instead of the school event. Williams said the girls were shaken up, but OK physically. He had neck and back pain.

For Carla Sofronski, her work in the opioid crisis is personal. "A few times a year, I have to tell families that their loved ones passed away and it is very difficult to do," she told NBC10 Investigators. And the sense of loss does not stop with the people she helps through her organization, the Pennsylvania Harm Reduction Network, which does advocacy and education in the state for programs like Narcan, fentanyl testing strip distribution and syringe exchanges.

Tonya Kersey was at a medical appointment on the afternoon of March 20, 2025, when a neighbor called her to say that her son, Aaron Rainey, was walking in between traffic naked with his pants around his ankles. She asked her neighbor to help him. "She went down there and got a blanket and told him to cover himself up and fix his clothes and stuff," Kersey said. By then, police had already been called.
