BEND, Ore. -- Thursday marked the start of a year-long closure of Deschutes National Forest land south of Bend and the eviction of dozens of homeless people, some who have lived in the forest for years. The closure for the Cabin Butte Vegetation Management Project brought Forest Service workers and Deschutes County sheriff's deputies to enforce the closure. It also brought a large number of advocates for the homeless who must find somewhere new to live or face steep fines, jail time or both.
