A competition for the strongest town

Bend is in a contest to be one of the "strongest towns." We like a good contest and winning, though voting in this round may be over by the time you see this. Strong Towns, a nonprofit that runs the contest, is dedicated to the idea that the "suburban experiment" was the wrong idea. Its approach is hard to summarize in only a few words, but it likes bottom up rather than top down local government formation of policy. It likes resiliency.

You may not be able to define “fractal” — yet — but fractals are, in fact, everywhere. As you might expect from hearing her title, Hayley Brazier, Donald M. Kerr curator of natural history at the High Desert Museum, does know a lot about fractals, including the definition, as the curator of “Patterns at Play: Fractals in Nature,” a new exhibit that takes visitors on a deep dive into fractals, starting Saturday at the museum.

Clines Butte is a series of three connected hills west of Redmond and adjacent to Eagle Crest Resort. Though the three domes are a staple of Central Oregon’s High Desert skyline, and I’ve been close many times, such as when visiting nearby Maston riding area, I’d never made the trek up to the top before last Saturday.

Forecasts predict a cool weekend before a return of warmer temperatures next week. Saturday is expected to be overcast with a high of 65 degrees. Sunday should be 10 degrees warmer and sunny and temperatures should rise even more into next week, with highs in the 80s. The rain on Thursday and Friday gave our dusty trails a much-needed hosing, which should make for some great mountain biking this weekend.

Art in the High Desert, the special gem of a juried art show first held in Bend in 2008, will return to its hometown starting Friday evening for a weekend full of art. Want to help monarch butterflies? Plant milkweed

Monarch butterflies are afoot locally, according to staff at the Deschutes Land Trust, a local nonprofit that works to restore and preserve land tracts and waters that sustain central Oregon. Over the past couple of weeks, there have been sightings of western monarch butterflies around central Oregon, including the Land Trust’s 151-acre Camp Polk Meadow Preserve. That’s good news for monarch fans, as well as the struggling species.
