Late season snow blankets Mt. Bachelor, improves snowpackPublished 3:51 pm Monday, May 12, 2025A late blast of wintery weather swept over the Central Cascades early on Monday morning, blanketing Mt. Bachelor and other high altitude areas with over eight inches of snow. The snow level dipped to around 5,000 ft. according to Ed Townsend, science and operations officer for the National Weather Service in Pendleton.

Timed reservation tickets open for Lava River CavePublished 11:55 am Friday, May 9, 2025Lava River Cave, one of the top attractions on the Deschutes National Forest, will open this year on May 16. For those traveling to the cave by vehicle, tickets for timed reservations to enter the cave - open from mid-May to mid-September - are now available. A valid federal recreation pass is also required for each vehicle. Visitors who walk or bike to the site do not need a timed reservation.

Dock replacement at Crane Prairie planned this weekPublished 12:47 pm Tuesday, May 6, 2025The Deschutes National Forest is planning to install a new, permanent boat dock this week at Crane Prairie Reservoir. Construction work, scheduled for Thursday and Friday, will temporarily close the Crane Prairie boat launch during installation work. The boating site parking lot will be minimally impacted by the project and will remain available for vehicle and trailer parking.
