The Showdown in Sugatown took place over the weekend as youth and novice boxers from multiple states gathered in Stuttgart for the event, hosted by Stuttgart Gloves Not Guns Boxing Club and sanctioned by USA Boxing. Saturday’s card featured ten bouts, with competitors ranging from the Pee Wee Male Novice Division to an Elite Male bout. “A lot of work went into this summer’s event,” said Stuttgart Gloves Not Guns volunteer Paul Colvin.

Three Stuttgart Junior High students recently returned from Space Academy Expedition 36, held at the U.S. Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville, Alabama. Space Camp Expedition 36 lasted from June 1 through June 6. Katy Smith, Hayden Beckwith, and Mason Brawley were selected to participate in the prestigious program through the GEAR UP initiative (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs).

Stuttgart athletics announced the 2025-2026 coaching assignments on Tuesday afternoon. While there are few changes across the board, a few new faces arrive as part of the overall program, and some coaches have changed assignments. The Birds have new boys’ basketball coaches in senior high and junior high, as well as changes to the junior high and senior high cheer programs. In addition, Stuttgart brings in volleyball coaches for the first time this season.

Stuttgart basketball wasted little time putting Ricebird Arena to use this summer, hosting an on-campus team camp Wednesday that brought six schools from around the region to the Grand Prairie. In addition to Stuttgart, Bradford, Palestine-Wheatley, Rose Bud, Monticello, and Star City participated in the event. The Stuttgart senior boys played three games during the day, winning two. Stuttgart dropped their first game to Star City, 43-34, before bouncing back with a 39-31 win over Monticello.

There is hope that Ricebird fans have much to look forward to this fall following Stuttgart’s strong showing at the Panther 7-on-7 tournament in Benton on Tuesday. In six games, Stuttgart finished with a 5-1 record. The team’s only loss came in the semifinals, where they fell to Clinton, 47-41, in triple overtime. A total of 18 teams competed in this year’s tournament, the 12th annual Panther 7-on-7 event.
