With that in mind, the Michigan State Police is reminding citizens to keep their firearms secure, especially in the presence of children. The alternatives are just not worth it, especially with a gun-storage law that took effect last year. MSP posts throughout the state are offering free gun locks to firearm owners, with no limit on how many locks any one person can obtain. “We don’t ask questions,” said MSP Lt. Kim Vetter.

BAY CITY, MI — Three Cuban nationals have been sentenced to federal prison for trying to rob a Midland County marijuana grow operation in 2023. As a result, they could face deportation to their home country once they’ve served their time. U.S. District Judge Thomas L. Ludington on Thursday, June 5, sentenced Addier Meija-Torres, 50, and Andy Gomez-Niebla, 39, to 46 months in prison. The judge sentenced Yoany Alvarez-Antuna, 42, to 40 months.

SAGINAW, MI — A federal grand jury has indicted two more men on charges of perpetrating a smash-and-grab robbery of a Birch Run jewelry store. They join three others linked to a robbery ring that allegedly targeted businesses in Saginaw and Genesee counties. The grand jury on May 21 issued a superseding indictment charging Deon Thomas and Lorenzo Terry with interference with commerce by robbery. A grand jury in February indicted Kilaun M. SAGINAW, MI — A jury has acquitted a meth-addled woman of being responsible for Michigan State Police Trooper Joel E. Popp’s line-of-duty death. Jurors deliberated for just about an hour on Thursday, June 5, before finding Brooke L. Allen, 33 of Haslett, not guilty of operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated causing death, a 15-year felony. SAGINAW, MI — A Saginaw man has admitted in federal court to having an illegal machine gun. On the state level, he remains charged with using that gun to shoot two teens in an attempt to kill them. Christopher P. Ramirez, 26, on April 17 appeared before U.S. District Magistrate Judge Patricia T. Morris and pleaded guilty to possessing a machine gun. The felony is punishable by up to 10 years in federal prison, a $250,000 fine, and three years of supervised release.
