It was a tragedy forever remembered in Torquay as "that awful day" - 21 children killed while attending Sunday school at church. For the people of the town, May 30, 1943, was the deadliest and saddest day of the war. More than 80 years on there are still some who remember the devastation caused when German aircraft bombed the town. Services held every year at the St Mary the Virgin church are a reminder that the horrors of conflict cast a long shadow and often claim the most innocent lives.

The unusual name of a Devon road has been causing confusion among locals for years. Hellevoetsluis Way, a dual carriageway in Torquay, was given its impossible to pronounce title amid controversy in 1990 and ever since, folks have been puzzled about how to pronounce it. When the road sign was first unveiled, a troublemaker silently came in at night and altered the sign, changing it to 'Hell of a Way' after a series of mishaps that happened in its early days.

If you didn't know about it, you wouldn't even know there was ever any signs of life. But long forgotten, and hidden in the cliffs, is a magical nook between Torquay and Shaldon, which was once home to a village now lost to time. Over time it included a pub, quay, the once grand but now fire-destroyed Labrador Bay Hotel, fabulous tea gardens with adjoining market garden and fruit farm and holiday chalets.
